21 Days of STEAM Activities – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics

This month we are focusing on all STEAM activities. You may of heard of STEM, before. Add in Art on you have STEAM. I absolutely love that Art is getting the recognition it deserves. My 9 year old loves building and is such a little engineer. But it’s her artistic creativity that drives her to build and what makes her creations so special.

Since we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Spring, we decided to do 21 days of STEAM activities for March as a sort of count down to the first day of Spring. I’ll be posting our daily STEAM related activities here and you can follow along on Instagram too!

21 STEAM Activities for kids – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics

Day 1 – Leprechaun Trap

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

You can use things you have around the house. Your kids will have to come up with a design, decide what type of trapping mechanism and problem solve to make it work.

Day 2 – Spring Slime

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

Slime is always a hit! All kids love playing with slime and when you DIY it, you can talk about the science behind it. A great “learn though play” activity. Plus, this recipe was super easy and not messy at all (my favorite part!).

Day 3 – Botany for Kids; Egg Planting Experiment

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

Minimal supplies, just seeds, soil and dryer lint. It’s perfect for Springtime, you can pick seeds that you can plant in your yard after they’ve sprouted. We chose sunflowers. And the kids love watching their plants grow!

Day 4 – Balloon Chemistry

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

Simple and safe chemical reactions are so much fun! This is a playful science experiment, that is very hands-on and it’s really cool to watch the balloon blow up! There is a good chance you have everything you need for this one already in the house. All it requires is vinegar, baking soda, balloon and water bottle.

Day 5 – Indoor Flower Garden

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

We had a kit for this one. It came with everything we needed which made it nice and easy. My daughter really liked that she was able to paint the container. And the instructions told us to soak the seeds in water for 30 minutes. I’ve never done that before and our seeds sprouted after only 3 days! So I’ll definitely be doing that from now on.

Day 7 – Making Rain Clouds

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

A very hands on way to learn about weather science. Simple supplies, all you need is foam shaving cream, food coloring, a vase and water.

Day 8 – Candy Rainbow

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

It’s so pretty and so fun to watch! I’ve seen this done with skittles usually. We decided to experiment with M&Ms to see if we got the same result. The kids thrilled to see it worked! I think we might try jelly beans too!

Day 9 – DIY Lava Lamp

Why we like it:

My daughter has been asking for a Lava Lamp, now she has one! It requires pretty basic supplies that you may already have on hand. It’s easy to assemble and fun to watch!

Day 10 – Dissolving Peeps Experiment

Why we like it:

We are not fans of peeps so we didn’t mind watching them dissolve, lol. You can use any liquids you have on hand. Fun hands on experiment to practice the scientific method. We all “hypothesized” what would happen.

Day 11 – Color Changing Flowers

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

Easy to get supplies. A simple experiment that looks pretty too! It’s the perfect time of year to brighten things up with some flowers. This experiment helps young learners “see” the plants absorb water.

Why we like it:

You use left overs from your own kitchen for this one so I love that! It’s a great hands on learning activities for kids. They will enjoy watching the progress of their plants day after day. So many lessons in one activity!

Here’s a few ideas of kitchen scraps that you can regrow.

Day 13 – Peep Launcher

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

Building is fun! We got to use our engineering and problem solving skills to send a peep flying across the room!

Day 21 – Humpty Dumpty Science

Science for kids, STEAM activities, Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics for kids

Why we like it:

This one was so much fun. The kids were very excited at the idea of smashing eggs, even hard-boiled ones, lol. They were able to brainstorm ideas and search around the house for things that would keep their eggs from cracking. I hard boiled a bunch of eggs so they each do a few. Once they tried it once they started to get better ideas.
