5 Reasons To Take a Family Hike

There are so many reasons to take a family hike, in this post you’ll find 5 of my favorite reasons. I’ve always enjoyed a good nature walk. When I became a Mom I couldn’t wait to share that with my kids. I got them out on a trail as soon as I could! Whether it was in a carrier, in a stroller or in a wagon (if the terrain allowed it) we hit the trails as much as we could!

So if you’re looking for a reason to take a family hike I’ve got 5 for ya right here!

Take a family hike

#1 Learn a respect and love for nature

I’ve always felt the importance of teaching this to my kids. Helping them understand their role on this planet and that they are part of something so much bigger than themselves. The more time they spend in nature the easier it is to teach this valuable lesson.

#2 Fresh air and exercise (a.k.a. tire them out)

At any age fresh air is always beneficial for children, actually all humans really. Fresh air in their lungs and some sunshine on their face (with SPF of course!) does wonders for your kids and you alike. Plus it builds muscle strength and endurance along with helping improve balance and agility. And that all translates to whats most important to us parents, some tired out kids, amiright?!?

#3 Learn about history of the land on a family hike

While on your family hike look for native plants. Look them up and do some research. You will be amazed by the history and stories that come along with different species of plants. There is an app that I love to use called iNaturalist, it is great for identifying plants and animals (download it here). You don’t realize how much history of where you live can be discovered when your learn about the plants and wildlife in your area.

#4 Practice “leave no trace”

Something I always say to my kids is, “Leave it as you found it.” Whatever we bring in, we bring out. We cause no damage to trees or any wildlife. It’s a great opportunity to teach your kids about respect and the affect that their actions have on the world around us.

#5 Time away from screens

No need for explanation here. Time away from screens is good for all of us. Especially while living through a pandemic and all the other terrifying things going on in the world, we could all use some extra time away screens.

These are just my top 5 reasons to go on a family hike!
