Potty Training the Twins -Day 1

Before I started, I realized I was going to need 2 little potties.  I started with just one, foolishly thinking they would take turns…no such luck.  Like most things with twins, they each want their own.  I had an older one we use for long car rides, it comes in handy when the little ones all of a sudden HAVE TO GO, lol.  Luckily, they were happy with 2 different ones.  With my first 2 children, we started with the little potty, then progressed to the little seat on top of the big toilet.  That seemed like a natural progression to me.  And it worked well with both of them as they each moved through it in their own way.  Being pushy or trying to rush this will never be helpful! No matter how frustrating it gets.  I will probably repeat that 100 times through this series, but I have to remind myself too.  If you are buying a little potty I can recommend this one or one like it.  It gets you through all the phases of potty training.  Click the link below and check it out.

So, Day 1 did not go as bad as I anticipated (I was prepared for the absolute worst).  Yes, there were a few accidents but I only stepped in pee with my socks once! I thought that was pretty good! I learned 2 things from our first day.  1) The bigger kids can be very helpful.  My daughter loved the idea of giving them stickers every time they went on the potty and they loved getting them from her.  Since she was excited about them going she helped get them in the bathroom and keep them there. 2) They were responding very differently to potty training.  Lennon picked it up very quickly and was so happy to make pee and dump it in the toilet and flush it.  He only had 1 accicdent on the floor all day! Logan on the other hand, hated it.  It was much more of a struggle to get him on the potty.  He would cry and bring me diapers to put on him.  Honestly, I felt a little bad but I stuck with it.  And he did have a few successful potty trips.

Right now, we are sticking with the no diaper at all, except at bedtime.  Every 20/30 minutes I bring them to the potty.  I have a few days that we don’t have to leave the house for anything, so, we are basically on house arrest for the next few days.  I truly believe this method works the best, a potty training “boot camp”.  I also believe that pull ups don’t help and may even slow down potty training but I aso know that they are a necessity sometimes in this world we live in.  It’s hard to not leave the house for an extended peroid, impossible for some people.  It was like that with my oldest son.  We are on the go much more then, I was still working .  He ended up in pull ups because no one wants their kid peeing in the middle of picking up the older kids from school, or a trip in the car, or in a store.  Also, sending him with a sitter and knowing they wouldn’t pay close enough attention to getting him to the bathroom on time. Pull ups became a necessity then. And he came through potty training just fine.  Whatever works for your family is always the best answer!

Well, we made it through Day 1! Lets get ready for Day 2!
