10 Educational free websites and apps for your little ones!!

I want to share this list today because I had a hard time finding educational free websites and apps for my own children that were of any quality.  I came across this list in a pile of papers that was sent home from my daughter’s school.  We have tried all of them.  Many of them I wished I had known about earlier.  In this post I’ll give you a brief review of each site, to give you an idea of what its about, who its good for, and what age range its best suited for.

  1. Nat Geo for Kids

“We teach kids about the world and how it works, empowering them to succeed and to make it a better place”  That’s National Geographic and that’s why I have always been a huge fan!  The Nat Geo Kids channel is great, their website is great, their app is great (and free)! The website and app offer exciting and interesting videos, fun and educational games and there is also an animal guide that is packed full of information!  Nat Geo Kids is good for all ages, even preschool age. And a must for your science loving kid! Check out the website!

2.  Fun Brain

Fun brain is great for pre-k through 8th grade.  They offer hundreds of games, books, videos, and printables all designed to help kids develope skills in math, reading, problem-solving, and literacy.  They make it very easy to find the content that is exactly right for you and your child.   I definitely recommend checking it out!

3. PBS kids

PBS is another one I have been a long time fan of.  They have some great shows and their website and app, both free, are loaded with games and videos.  If your child likes any of the PBS shows you really need to get over to the website or download that app!

4. Suessville

All I can say about this website is I WISH I HAD KNOWN ABOUT IT SOONER!  Who doesn’t love Dr. Suess, who?? This free website is amazing!
There are activities and games.  There are an enormous amount of resources for parents!  In the parent section you can find crafts, Dr. Suess themed recipes, printables.  There are classroom activities that can be shared with teachers.  There is just so much great stuff to find on this site.  Please check it out!

5. ABCya

ABCya is great for pre-k to grade 5.  It is free to use on a PC but does contain ads.  The ads are all appropriate and I didn’t find them to be in the way or annoying at all.  For the app you do need a subscription, the family plan is 6.99/month.  That gives you access to use up to 3 devices at a time, no ads and over 200 games.  This site is really great, it is one of the top-rated and most used educational websites.  When my daughter started kindergarten, they used this site in her classroom so she was signed up through her school and we did not need to subscribe.  Hop over to the website and take a look around.

6. Star Fall

Star Fall is a great website. They have a number of apps available also. They are all free or low-cost. This site started as somewhere kids could have fun while learning to read.   It was created by someone who, himself, struggled with reading as a child. It started with just focusing on phonics and reading. Its offerings have now expanded to include songs, books and mathematics activities, and is suited for kids up to the 2nd grade. This is one of my daughters favorites! She loved when they used it in class in kindergarten and she loves that they use it in her 1st grade class too!

7.   Highlights kids

The highlights kids website is awesome! And so much fun! There are tons of options to choose from. Plenty of games and activities. They have jokes, crafts, even a podcast! Another one of my kids favorites!

8. Switcheroo Zoo

This is another one for your animal loving kids! The idea behind this site is the ability to create new animals from different parts of other animals. There are facts about all 142 different species in the zoo. And there is an endangered species map also. There is an app too! Both are perfect for your future zoologist!

9. Storyline Online

The benefits of reading aloud to your children are countless.  Storyline Online streams videos of celebrated actors reading stories alongside beautiful illustrations. It is an award winning literacy program and is definitely worth checking out! Especially if your child is struggling with reading or if you are struggling with trying to get your child engaged in story time. It is completely nonprofit and the website and app are free!

10. Into the book

This site is for elementary school students, it’s a little too advanced for pre-K, even kindergarten. It is a great resource for teachers and students. And I would highly recommend it for elementary school age children who need help with comprehension.

This list is a great place to start if you’re looking for an interactive, educational way to engage your children. Getting them learning while having fun will help create that love of learning that all children should have.

If you have a child that you feel is struggling, or just want to make sure they’re ready to start school, these sites can really help.  All while keeping it light and fun for you and your little one.

There can be an enormous amount of frustration that comes with learning new things or starting school.  For you AND your child. Use these sites to your advantage. When my daughter started pre-k her teacher quickly told me that she was ready to start learning to read.  Honestly, it had not occurred to me at that point that she could be ready.  I felt so unprepared and caught of guard!  So my advice to you is introduce your child to new things early, see what interests them and what doesn’t. Follow their cues, and find the fun in learning what peaks their interest!
